Robotic Surgery Q & A

What is robotic surgery?

The da Vinci Xi® robotic operating technology is an advanced system for performing a range of gynecologic surgeries, such as a hysterectomy. The system assists Dr. Leung or Dr. Tsai as they perform surgery, with a camera arm, two mechanical arms, a 3D processing system, and a surgical console.

How does robotic surgery work?

Dr. Tsai or Dr. Leung conduct your surgery alongside the robotic system in a hospital. They operate through a surgical console, which translates their movements in real-time to the robotic arms. The robotic arms hold a variety of small surgical instruments. Your doctor directs the arms to perform your surgery through tiny incisions.

Why do I need robotic surgery?

Oahu OB/GYN doctors often recommend robotic surgery to treat a variety of women’s health conditions, including:

  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Chronic pelvic pain

In these cases, your doctor discusses a robotic-assisted hysterectomy as a treatment option if medications or other alternatives haven’t relieved your condition.

Robotic surgery can also treat pelvic prolapse (where your uterus, rectum, or bladder drop into your vagina).

What are the advantages of da Vinci Xi robotic surgery?

da Vinci Xi robotic surgery may offer a number of potential benefits over traditional hysterectomies, including:

  • Less pain
  • Less blood loss during surgery
  • Fewer scars
  • Fewer complications
  • A shorter hospital stay

After robotic surgery, you may be able to resume your normal daily activities more quickly than with traditional surgery.

What questions should I ask about da Vinci robotic surgery?

If other treatments haven’t helped your condition, your doctor at Oahu OB/GYN discusses the risks and benefits of robotic surgery. Here are some questions you may wish to ask

  • What are my medical and surgical options?
  • What procedure is best for my condition?
  • How does robotic surgery compare to laparoscopic or open surgery?
  • How do I prepare for surgery?
  • What should I expect after robotic surgery?

If you’ve been troubled by pelvic pain and bleeding, and other treatments haven’t helped, perhaps it’s time to explore the advantages of robotic surgery. Dr. Leung and Dr. Tsai are the only two female OBGYNs offering this service on the island, and Dr. Tsai has been performing this surgery since 2009.
